This is technical field inspection work in enforcing safety laws and regulations pertaining to mines and quarries.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing technical field inspection work to assure compliance with mining and quarrying safety laws, rules and regulations. Work involves periodic inspections of assigned sites to determine adherence to safety standards. Work also includes investigating complaints, determining causes of accidents, and recommending corrective measures. The employee works with considerable independence, but he receives direction from the Chief Mine Inspector through reports, conferences, and occasional personal review.
Inspects pits, quarries, and underground mines to determine that all necessary precautions have been taken to insure the health and safety of the employees.
Determines whether explosives are properly stored and used and takes corrective action, if necessary.
Inspects tunnel, trench, and shaft excavations and construction to determine compliance with safety and health standards.
Investigates accidents to determine cause and responsibility and makes report to Chief Mine Inspector.
Investigates complaints concerning violations of safety and health.
Recommends measures to correct hazardous conditions.
Prepares reports of inspections and investigations.
Performs other related work as assigned.
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
Four years of experience in mining, of which one year must have involved substantial work or training in mine safety.
OR
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with specialization in engineering, geology, physics, chemistry, biology, or in closely related areas.

Considerable knowledge of mining and quarrying operations, and of the occupational hazards involved.
Knowledge of the safety laws and regulations pertaining to mines and quarries.
Ability to detect hazardous conditions and practices in mines and quarries.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with representatives of the mining industry, other governmental agencies, and labor union officials.
