Definition

This is mid-level professional work planning and directing interpretive operations in an assigned state park or historic site with special habitat management areas, and/or historic structures and cultural resources.

Job Duties

Plans and directs natural and/or cultural history interpretation, resource management and research in an assigned state park or historic site.

Researches, develops, conducts and/or presents natural and cultural resource lectures, exhibits, interpretive and educational programs, audio-visual programs, visitor activities and publications relating to a state park or historic site to visitors and/or at schools or other community locations.

Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates seasonal and volunteer interpretation staff.

Participates on natural and/or cultural resource management project crews.

Monitors and samples resources; collects statistical and survey data.

Accessions and catalogs artifacts and specimen collections.

Assumes responsibility for an assigned state park or historic site in the absence of the facility manager.

Develops periodic statistical reports which provide analysis of resource monitoring; prepares reports of issues and incidents.

Provides state park or historic site visitors with information concerning facilities and regulations.

Assists in the maintenance of a state park or historic site.

Opens and closes public facilities.

Exercises independence in planning and directing daily operations with general administrative direction; work is reviewed for overall quality and effectiveness.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

One or more years of experience as an Interpretive Resource Specialist I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Environmental, Biological or Natural Sciences, Natural Resources, Resource Management, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, or a closely related field; and ,

Two or more years of experience in research, development and/or presentation of interpretive and educational programs in a park, historic site or museum; management of natural and/or cultural resources; researching and/or presenting information relating to artifacts or archaeological sites; teaching science or history; or comparable experience in a conservation or environmental program.

(Additional qualifying experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education.)

(Earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the specified areas may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience at a rate of 24 earned graduate credit hours for one year.)

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Intermediate knowledge of the natural and cultural resources of the assigned state park and/or historic site, and the State of Missouri.

Intermediate knowledge of the policies, programs and procedures related to state park and/or historic site operations.

Intermediate knowledge of natural and/or cultural history research and resource management methods and techniques.

Intermediate knowledge of historic structure construction and repair methods, and the proper utilization and care of equipment used in interpretive operations and/or resource management.

Intermediate knowledge of the proper techniques for handling, cataloging, cleaning and preserving natural history objects and/or historic and archaeological artifacts.

Ability to conduct research to develop interpretive programs.

Ability to prepare and present information about the natural and cultural history of state parks and/or historic sites, and to develop related exhibits.

Ability to train, supervise and evaluate staff.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports, and to secure and analyze facts.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle and use hand or power tools.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, school officials, community organizations and the general public.
