Definition

This is technical work providing general assistance to dentists in an institutional dental health clinic.

An employee of this class assists dentist performing professional services for patients. Work involves the cleaning of teeth under supervision and assisting the dentist in examining, operating room, and laboratory procedures. Work also involves giving instructions by means of individual and group demonstrations, in the effective use of dental prophylaxis. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a dentist and is subject to review by the medical staff served.

Job Duties

Examines and maps dental patterns of patients on admission.

Assists the Dentist in laboratory work, including radiographs, examination for identification of dental defects, cleaning and polishing of teeth.

Assists the Dentist in the operating room, including sterilization of instruments and general sanitation of the dental laboratory.

Visits patients and aids on the ward, giving individual and group instructions and training in elementary routines required for good oral hygiene.

Instructs aids and other nursing personnel in good practices in oral hygiene.

Maintains records of patient treatment, prepares reports, etc.

Checks and orders supplies and equipment for the dental laboratory as required.

Performs other related work as required.

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Possession of a high school diploma or proof of a high school equivalency; and successful completion of a two year training course in an accredited school of Dental Hygiene.

Special Requirements

Ability to secure a license to practice as a dental hygienist as issued by the Missouri State Board of Dental Examiners.

Ability to explain the fundamentals of dental care and oral hygiene to patients.
