This is specialized work in the Missouri Department of Mental Health planning, developing, and conducting direct care orientation and in-service training programs which focus on the care and treatment of sex offenders and/or forensic clients with mental illness.
Conducts orientation, annual training, and in-service training courses in the principles of mental health treatment and therapy, safety and security techniques, and/or other relevant topics.
Consults with administrative staff and other supervisory personnel to identify training needs; develops, prepares, and modifies training materials or assists in these tasks.
Prepares or coordinates training schedules with mental health facility staff; maintains appropriate records.
Assists in developing methods and procedures for the improvement of safety and security as it relates to working with sex offenders and/or forensic clients with mental illness in a secure mental health setting.
Assists in developing methods and procedures for the improvement of therapeutic activities and boundaries and client supervision in a secure setting.
Prepares or assists in preparing an annual training plan and report.
Provides continuing practical training and/or reinforcement of techniques to direct care staff working with sex offenders and/or forensic clients with mental illness.
Performs assigned duties under general administrative direction.
Performs other related work as assigned.
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
Two or more years of experience as a Security Aide II and/or III with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
Four or more years of direct care experience on a ward or unit specific to forensic clients with primary diagnosis of mental illness; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the required experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year.)

Comprehensive knowledge of mental health principles and practices relating to the treatment and therapy of forensic clients with mental illness and sex offending behaviors.
Comprehensive knowledge of methods and procedures for the treatment, safety, security, and supervision related to persons with mental illness and sex offending behaviors.
Intermediate knowledge of the organization, function, and operation of an inpatient maximum/intermediate security program within a mental health facility.
Intermediate knowledge of the basic methods and techniques involved in developing and presenting training.
Ability to assist mental health facility administration and other departmental staff in identifying training needs and developing appropriate training materials.
Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to lead discussions and instruct direct care staff in a classroom or practical setting.
Ability to operate audio-visual aids and other equipment used in the training process.
Ability to gain and sustain confidence and respect of staff.
