This is mid-level social service work involving the coordination and monitoring of offender organizations and related activities with the Missouri Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Institutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: social or behavioral sciences, Education, Recreation, Public Relations, or a closely related field.

OR

Sixty or more earned credit hours from an accredited college or university; and,

Two or more years of experience as a Corrections Officer I or Probation and Parole Assistant I, or in the control and treatment of offenders or comparable military or law enforcement experience.

(Additional qualifying experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required college education. No substitutions are allowed for deficiencies in a high school diploma or GED certificate for this classification.)

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Plans, develops, and coordinates new or revised facility activity programs, including offender organizations, work release and/or education release.

Confers with supervisors and various facility department heads with regard to activity planning and scheduling for the purpose of developing a more comprehensive program.

Monitors files and works with facility treatment teams in order to identify offenders eligible for participation in program activities; monitors and maintains records of eligible participants; and makes referrals to appropriate community service or job site.

Schedules and supervises offender groups or workers functioning outside the facility.

Schedules volunteer and related groups for visits to the facility.

Assists offender groups in selection of community projects and areas of interest through personal community contacts and related work.

Develops resources within the community for an effective volunteer program.

Enlists the support of interested volunteer and professional groups and employers in making their programs or jobs available to offenders.

Performs work in accordance with established rules and regulations; receives general and administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge in the areas of development, organization, and supervision as applied to various community oriented activities for offenders of a correctional facility.

Comprehensive knowledge of the psychology and problems of adult offenders and the ability to adapt community activity programs to individual and group needs.

Ability to perceive and evaluate public feelings and their effect upon planned or existing community activity programs for offenders.

Ability to organize and coordinate a complex program of community activities involving daily visits of volunteer groups to facilities and offender visits to the community.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various facility officials and community leaders while serving the best interests of the offenders.

Ability to gain and hold the confidence of offenders and work effectively with them.

Ability to prepare and deliver presentations effectively.
