This is professional work performing business management activities and supervision of support and technical functions in a laboratory setting.

Two or more years of experience performing business activities and supervising laboratory support functions in a medical or laboratory setting; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
(A combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience described may substitute for the stated qualifications.)
Ability to perceive the color spectrum.
By assignment, position may be required to obtain and maintain Federal Dangerous Goods Shipping (Class 6) certification and/or meet USDOT hazardous materials shipping regulations.

Hires, directs, and supervises staff responsible for laboratory support functions; develops staffing plans to ensure that essential laboratory functions are maintained.
Mentors staff; evaluates employee performance; recommends and implements disciplinary/ corrective action; approves and monitors leave.
Devises and implements new laboratory work practices to improve quality.
Assists management in determining appropriate laboratory submission processes.
Oversees the reporting of highly consequential laboratory results.
Develops unit budget; approves purchases and expenditures after considering funding and laboratory priorities; and works closely with laboratory management to ensure fiscal integrity of the unit.
Maintains stock and inventory; prepares specifications for laboratory supplies, testing kit components, equipment, and other commodities.
Compiles and summarizes laboratory data and reports.
Ensures that staff are properly certified in order to meet laboratory credentialing standards.
Provides customer assistance to determine testing needs; identifies issues and provides solutions.
Oversees the proper handling and disposal of laboratory waste.
Performs technical laboratory support work as needed to meet the needs of the laboratory including pre-analytical and post-analytic functions.
Exercises significant independent judgment and initiative under general administrative direction.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of management and supervision, departmental policies and procedures, and standard record maintenance requirements.
Comprehensive knowledge of inventory and storekeeping methods regarding property accountability and records maintenance, and procedures used in the receipt, storage, and shipment of laboratory supplies and test kits.
Comprehensive knowledge of procurement and purchasing procedures and budget processes.
Comprehensive knowledge of the proper procedures for safe collection, handling, sterilization and neutralization, and disposal of chemicals, infectious materials, hazardous biological wastes, contaminated glassware, and laboratory equipment.
Ability to train and supervise staff and develop staffing plans to ensure that essential laboratory functions are maintained.
Ability to maintain financial records, prepare fiscal reports, and assist in developing contracts, budget request, and grants.
Ability to organize and coordinate the efforts of others in carrying out assigned functions.
Ability to communicate effectively and deliver group presentations.
Ability to understand and make independent decisions based on knowledge of agency operations, policies, and procedures.
Ability to maintain a high level of discretion when dealing with sensitive/confidential information and to understand and apply federal requirements for laboratory results and the release of information.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, unit heads, vendors, and the public.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move supplies and/or mail.
Ability to follow safety procedures regarding the use and storage of dry ice, acids, bases, and other assorted chemicals.
