This is supervisory public contact work directing the operation of a tourist Welcome Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Tourist Assistant with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Three or more years of public contact experience in: business, advertising and promotions, public relations, communication, education, law enforcement, parks, recreation, tourism activities, or a closely related area; and a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year.)

OR

Three or more years of public contact experience such as employment or credit interviewing, customer service representative, or a closely related area; and a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Directs the operation of a tourist Welcome Center; selects, trains, and supervises staff; ensures compliance with policies and procedures, and divisional and departmental strategic goals.

Serves as a liaison with Missouri Department of Transportation staff in shared facilities; conducts site inspections for cleanliness, safety, and security; coordinates and oversees contract staff employed to repair buildings and equipment.

Oversees and provides courteous and accurate travel assistance, and information such as Missouri tourist publications, maps, and brochures.

Researches, develops, and delivers presentations regarding tourism services/activities to facility visitors and organizations, and at trade shows, conferences, and related events.

Participates in developing and editing informational items such as brochures, newsletters, and websites for tourism-related activities.

Prepares daily tourist/travel statistics to include number of visitors, international visitors, cars, buses, and groups; prepares monthly report for Welcome Center activities.

Manages inventory of Missouri tourist publications; orders publications to restock levels.

Participates in seminars, training, and committees.

Exercises independent judgment and initiative in carrying out assigned responsibilities; receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed for effectiveness and adherence to policies and procedures.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Comprehensive knowledge of travel and tourist attractions within the State of Missouri.

Comprehensive knowledge in the use of maps, mileage charts, and related materials.

Comprehensive knowledge of Missouri history, historical events, and places of interest.

Intermediate knowledge of community resources and organizations.

Intermediate knowledge of computers.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with travel professionals, media representatives, community/organization representatives, and the general public.

Ability to direct, organize, and train staff.

Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Ability to greet the general public.

Ability to make presentations and speak clearly when providing information regarding the State of Missouri.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
