This is mid-level direct care work involving the care and treatment of persons with mental illness in a state mental health facility.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)
One or more years of experience as a Psychiatric Technician I or Security Aide I (Psychiatric) with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
OR
Two or more years of experience as a Developmental Assistant I or II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
OR
Two or more years of direct care experience on a ward or unit specific to residents who are primarily diagnosed with mental illness; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
(30 earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience.)

Serves as a mentor for Psychiatric Technician Is on an assigned ward/shift; assists in the instruction and orientation of new Psychiatric Technicians regarding their duties in the care and treatment of residents and the regulations of the facility; and provides direction and feedback regarding performance of duties.
Performs basic nursing care, such as checking vital signs, applying simple dressings, and providing general daily care of residents.
Administers oral, topical, and/or rectal medications under professional supervision after being certified by the Director of Nursing or other facility officials.
Reports rule infractions, complaints of residents or employees, and other incidents which require further action to an immediate supervisor.
Reports and records observable changes in resident behavior and physical condition.
Initiates and participates in implementing and conducting special programs for residents such as self-help skills, social behavior, remotivation, rehabilitation, and resocialization; oversees lower-level technicians in such programs.
Attends interdisciplinary team meetings to report observations of residents' behavior.
Participates in the continued in-service training and practical instruction of ward personnel.
Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment.
Prepares and maintains records and reports.
Performs duties without detailed instruction; receives general supervision from a professional nurse.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Intermediate knowledge of the general care and treatment of residents, including basic nursing, first aid, and emergency treatments.
Intermediate knowledge of elementary psychiatric nursing methods and principles and skill in their application in the care and treatment of the mentally ill.
Intermediate knowledge of facility practices, rules, and regulations.
Intermediate knowledge of the general nature of mental illness and ability to recognize and meet the emotional and physical needs of residents.
Ability to instruct lower-level staff in the care and treatment of residents.
Ability to perform first aid and emergency treatments as instructed.
Ability to accurately report and record observations.
Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for resident care and treatment.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
Ability to review and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
Ability to accept and adapt to change in assignments, methods, and policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, staff, supervisors, and the general public.
