Definition

This is mid-level technical work in field, laboratory, or office assignments; planning for land surveying, geology, hydrology, or architecture activities; or engineering activities that include construction, renovation, and/or inspection of facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Technical Assistant II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Three or more years of experience as a Building Construction Worker I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Four or more years of experience in drafting, computer aided drafting (CAD), basic engineering, land surveying, geological, or hydrological work; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Training in drafting or engineering technology from an approved vocational program may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Drafting, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Geology, Hydrology, Earth Science, Geophysics, Statistics, or Mathematics.">

(Experience in drafting, computer aided drafting (CAD), basic engineering, land surveying, geology, or hydrology may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Reviews and/or prepares plans, specifications, blueprints, maps, and related documents; ensures accurate construction measurements, size of units, capacities, length of pipelines, reinforcements, and unit locations.

Participates in the design and inspection of projects.

Assists professional surveyors or related professional staff in researching records and preparing field notes; converts field data into computer aided drafting (CAD) format.

Obtains samples of construction materials; assists with determining appropriate materials and cost estimates for projects.

Assists with geological and geophysical investigations and the drilling of boreholes; collects, stores, and maintains samples and records.

Performs routine laboratory and field tests; compiles statistical data, compares test results, and enters the information into databases.

Performs inspections of water wells, dams, buildings, and other structures; reviews records for compliance with regulations.

Uses surveying instruments to lay out and locate project sites, land boundaries, and determine elevations.

Maintains records relating to wastewater treatment permit applications, waterwell records, inspections, progress of projects, and construction materials used.

Proctors water and wastewater operator certificate examinations.

Receives plans, applications, specifications, blueprints, and related documents; responds to inquiries.

Operates, maintains, and monitors complex drilling, sampling, field, and/or laboratory equipment.

Receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed for adherence to established standards and procedures.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Intermediate knowledge of drafting, land development, geological, hydrological, and/or related software applications.

Intermediate knowledge of geology, hydrology, engineering, land surveying, and/or construction procedures.

Intermediate knowledge of the materials, methods, practices, machinery, tools, and equipment used in construction work.

Intermediate knowledge of drafting techniques, instruments, plan design, and layout procedures.

Intermediate knowledge of laboratory procedures.

Intermediate knowledge of the different types of wastewater treatment operations.

Intermediate knowledge of the properties of rocks, minerals, and surficial materials.

Intermediate knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations relating to surveying, geology, hydrology, architecture, or engineering activities.

Skill in obtaining field samples and using proper drafting techniques.

Skill in calibrating and operating field or sampling equipment and surveying instruments.

Ability to use computer aided drafting (CAD) applications and related software.

Ability to operate complex drilling equipment.

Ability to plot, draw, and use maps, plans, survey data, blueprints, drawings, and related documents.

Ability to inspect water wells, dams, buildings, and other structures for compliance with regulations.

Ability to make calculations and mathematical notations relating to land surveying, geological, hydrological, architectural, or engineering activities.

Ability to prepare statistical and technical spreadsheets and reports.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and to communicate effectively.

Ability to perform manual work requiring heavy lifting, reaching, and bending.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, property owners, officials, and the general public.
