This is professional administrative and/or supervisory geologic work.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Geologist III with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System and registration as a Geologist in the State of Missouri.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Geology, Geological Engineering, or a closely related field; and,

Eight or more years of professional geological experience including four or more years of diversified experience and registration as a Geologist in the State of Missouri.

(Earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the specified areas may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience at a rate of 24 earned graduate credit hours for one year of experience.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Administers and directs a major section of the statewide geologic program; coordinates work within the division, with other government agencies, with private sector organizations, management, and the general public.

Plans, directs, coordinates, and/or conducts highly skilled and technically complex work in engineering geology, environmental geology, mineral resources, and/or water resources.

Supervises professional, technical, and/or support staff; oversees the daily administrative duties of the unit and provides guidance to employees.

Develops and conducts studies and/or investigations in all aspects of geology, including groundwater, mineral resources, engineering geology, environmental geology, energy resources, geologic mapping, geologic hazards, and computer-related projects.

Plans, directs, and oversees technical projects which support division and department goals.

Reviews and evaluates technical reports and recommendations prepared by staff.

Coordinates and administers interdepartmental and departmental programs related to geology and/or water resources.

Provides technical guidance and/or information to staff; conducts presentations to professional or other groups at conferences; provides expert testimony at legal proceedings and public hearings.

Makes recommendations to administrative staff regarding program plans, policies, practices, and procedures.

Develops section budgets, staffing schedules, and other work related to issues that have intra/interdivision impact.

Develops and supervises training programs for technical staff.

Represents the division and/or department on committees, commissions, boards, public hearings, enforcement proceedings, and meetings.

Prepares and monitors grants and grant-related budgets and elements.

Receives general administrative direction; exercises considerable independence in judgment.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Comprehensive knowledge of current principles and practices of geology as applied to the conduct and supervision of advanced geologic mineral and groundwater resource, environmental geology, and engineering geology projects.

Comprehensive knowledge of the methods and equipment used in various aspects of geologic work.

Comprehensive knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes.

Ability to understand internal and external politics that impact the work of the organization.

Ability to oversee major projects from inception to completion within specified time frames and budgetary restraints.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of professional, technical, and/or support staff.

Ability to prepare, evaluate, and/or supervise the preparation of clear and concise geologic reports.

Ability to travel in the performance of assigned duties.

Ability to communicate effectively regarding geological issues.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, staff, associates, government and industry officials, professional organizations and groups, and the general public.
