This is entry-level work in recreation and related activities in a state facility.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Four or more years of experience as a Corrections Officer I, Corrections Classification Assistant, or higher level experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders or corrections case management with the Missouri Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Institutions.

OR

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Recreation, Physical Education, Leisure Studies, or a closely related field.

OR

Four or more years of work or volunteer experience in the field of group recreation or physical education involving responsibility for organizing, implementing, scheduling, and/or overseeing recreation activities; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of three years of the required experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year of experience.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Assists in conducting and overseeing a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, games, and sports such as baseball, basketball, gymnastics, calisthenics, chess, and ping-pong.

Provides individual and group instruction in the fundamentals and rules of various activities.

Assists in making arrangements and preparing for movies, group activities, special seasonal programs, and competitive events.

Issues recreation equipment and maintains records of its issuance and inspects the condition of equipment when returned; participates in the selection and requisition of recreation equipment.

Assists in the care and maintenance of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.

Participates in organizing athletic events, shows, and other outside recreation activities.

Observes the behavior and reaction of participants in activities and provides reports to a higher-level Recreation Officer.

Receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed through observations.

Performs other related work as assigned.
