This is professional work conducting a rehabilitative program of recreation and related outdoor skills activities for delinquent youth committed to the custody of the Division of Youth Services with the Missouri Department of Social Services.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
One or more years of experience performing adventure based counseling or treatment activities as a Youth Specialist II or higher level position with the Missouri Division of Youth Services; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
OR
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Education, Psychology, Sociology, Recreation, or a closely related field; and,
One or more years of professional experience in the field of rehabilitative therapy in an outdoor skills program (such as Outward Bound or an adventure based counseling or treatment program).
Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
Ability to pass a background investigation administered by the Missouri Division of Youth Services.

Conducts an intensive program of outdoor activities as part of a rehabilitative and counseling program.
Conducts follow-up program and evaluates participants' attitudes, progress, development, and commitment toward the program after completion of training.
Organizes and supervises various outdoor individual or group problem solving activities; assumes responsibility for a major phase of the program such as course planning, food selection, or preparation of equipment.
Interviews potential participants and researches files to screen candidates for adventure training therapy.
Orients selected participants to program objectives, activities, and expectations.
Instructs participants in various outdoor skills to include first aid, rock climbing, canoeing, route finding, or rappelling.
Supervises participants' applications of outdoor skills on a wilderness survival expedition (lasting 3-15 days).
Counsels participants on behavior and performance under stress and/or attitudes formed toward social integration.
Documents behavioral assessments of participants and their progress in the program through course and status reports.
Performs duties under general supervision from program directors or other administrative supervisors for conformance with policy and objectives.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of program activities such as route finding, rock climbing, first aid, canoeing, rappelling, spelunking, and identification and preparation of wild edibles.
Comprehensive knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and emergency treatment procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of the equipment, clothing, supplies, and tools necessary for the safe completion of all program activities.
Intermediate knowledge of the techniques, methods, and goals of rehabilitative therapy to include group dynamics, safety systems, and participant assessment.
Ability to gain and sustain the confidence of participants.
Ability to use good judgment and reason in emergency situations.
Ability to physically participate in the active direction of a variety of individual and group activities.
