Definition

This is specialized work in the operation of heavy equipment.

Job Duties

Operates heavy equipment (bulldozers, road graders, aerial devices, etc.) to assist with maintenance of and improvement to State of Missouri properties; operates medium sized equipment (large tractors, excavators, skid steers, dump trucks, backhoes, road tractors, etc.); and utilizes attachments and/or light equipment as needed.

Reads design plans to determine required grading and/or excavation; uses a transit to establish reference points to assist with establishing final grades.

Installs or replaces culverts, reestablishes ditch lines, adds aggregate surfacing material and/or grades gravel roads, parking areas, and trails utilizing heavy equipment.

Operates aerial devices to trim trees and/or remove hazardous limbs.

Operates heavy equipment to construct and/or repair roads, parking areas, and trails.

Excavates areas for installation and construction of footings and foundations for building construction.

Assists with debris removal, cleanup, and site restoration following unforeseen disasters utilizing a variety of equipment.

Loads, secures, transports, and unloads equipment, tools, and supplies.

Performs minor repairs, and routine and preventative maintenance on equipment; records and monitors equipment’s operating hours.

Performs manual labor incidental to assigned work assignments.

Instructs and trains other staff in the operation and proper use of equipment.

Confers with design and/or supervisory staff to confirm or seek clarification of assigned tasks; determines work methods and sequence.

Exercises independence and judgment in the performance of responsibilities under general supervision; work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspections.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Missouri Class A Commercial Driver License at time of appointment.

Ability to read design plans to determine excavation parameter, grades, set control points, and appropriate equipment needs.

Ability to perform work often requiring significant physical exertion in extreme weather and lift/carry heavy loads, traverse a variety of terrains, bend, stoop, reach, climb ladders, and work from heights.

Ability to communicate effectively.
