This is skilled mechanical and supervisory work on an assigned shift as the engineer in charge of a complex high pressure steam heating plant which may include electrical production, or of a high pressure, high temperature water heating plant.

An employee in this class is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of high pressure steam (above 15 pounds pressure) heating plant which may include electrical production, or of a high pressure, high temperature water (above 160 pounds pressure or 250 degrees Fahrenheit) heating plant on an assigned shift. Supervision is normally exercised over a Boiler Operator and/or other semi-skilled and unskilled helpers. Work is performed according to established methods and procedures, but is subject to direction and review by the Plant Maintenance Engineer.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Four years of experience in the operation, maintenance or repair of high pressure steam, steam-electric, or high pressure, high temperature water plant equipment; of which at least two years must have been at the level of Boiler Operator or Power Plant Mechanic; and completion of the eighth school grade.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Supervises the operations of a high pressure steam heating plant which may include electrical production, or of a high pressure, high temperature water heating plant on an assigned shift.

Supervises the work of Boiler Operators and other semi-skilled and or unskilled workers through periodic checks of boiler room operations.

Maintains, tests and operates diesel generators for emergency electric power production.

Makes minor adjustments and repairs to electrical generators, high pressure steam or high pressure, high temperature water boilers, pumps, refrigeration systems, and related plumbing equipment; assists in major repair work of this equipment.

Fires boilers and operates related auxiliary equipment as necessary.

Monitors instruments, meters and other controls to ensure that production and voltages are being maintained in accordance with instructions.

Starts, brings to proper speed, synchronizes and puts loads on generators; takes load off and shuts down generators.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of high pressure steam; high temperature, hot water; and electrical generation equipment including generators, electronic controls, meters, pumps and related equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to operate, maintain and repair power plant and related equipment.

Ability to supervise the work of Boiler Operators and other helpers.

Ability to keep accurate records of plant operations.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
