This is professional work inspecting funeral establishments for the Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
An Associate degree and one year of mortuary science courses from an accredited college or university; and,
Four or more years of experience as a funeral director and/or embalmer in a licensed funeral establishment.
Possession of licenses to practice as a Funeral Director and Embalmer in the State of Missouri at the time of appointment.

Inspects funeral home structure, equipment, accommodations, and operating procedures to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
Inspects sterilization of instruments, operation of wash sinks, drainage sinks, aspirators, floor cleanliness, and adequacy of vacuum and exhaust systems for compliance with embalming facility requirements.
Inspects required records, logs, written authorizations, space for containers and holding boxes, ventilation, and construction of chambers to withstand high temperatures for compliance with cremation facility requirements.
Inspects merchandise and service pricing, and storage space for caskets to ensure compliance with care and preparation requirements.
Inspects facility seating, drinking water, restrooms, and the availability of visitation and ceremony equipment such as music and flower stands.
Reviews registration credentials of trainees and licenses of funeral directors, embalmers, and crematory operators to ensure compliance with state licensing requirements.
Investigates consumer complaints of alleged safety violations, sanitation conditions, unethical conduct, and malpractice; determines severity of identified violations and non-compliance issues; compiles information to be used in legal actions.
Advises funeral directors, embalmers, and crematory operators of applicable laws and regulations.
Prepares inspection and investigation reports for the Executive Director and Board members for use as evidence; testifies at administrative and legal proceedings.
Plans and schedules work activities to achieve established goals.
Maintains state vehicle and assigned equipment.
Exercises independence and initiative in the performance of duties within established guidelines; receives general supervision from the Executive Director.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of funeral, cremation, and embalming statutes and regulations.
Comprehensive knowledge of inspection methods and procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental principles and practices of safety and sanitation methods.
Comprehensive knowledge of trends in the funeral industry.
Ability to interpret, explain, and apply funeral, cremation, and embalming statutes and regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively and prepare complete and concise reports.
Ability to travel extensively in the performance of assigned duties.
Ability to adapt to and work in an environment that may include hazardous chemicals/fumes, communicable diseases/infections, and combustible materials.
Ability to use electrical and vacuum equipment and climb ladders.
Ability to independently establish and complete daily work schedules.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with funeral industry representatives, funeral directors, embalmers, staff, and the general public.
