Missouri's First Detailed 2010 Census Counts

On Thursday, February 24, 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau released the first look at Missouri´s detailed Census counts. The information comes from the Public Law (P.L.) 94-171 file. This tabulation is specifically designed to aid in redrawing the boundaries for United States Congressional districts, state house and senate lines, and local government political boundaries. The file includes population counts and limited demographic and housing data. More in-depth information will be available from the Census Bureau in the summer of 2011 and will include national comparisons. The data provided does not contain national information.

Missouri´s population is 5,988,927 as of April 1, 2010 and showed a growth of 393,716 persons, or seven percent, during the first decade of the new millennium. The nation´s population had grown at a rate of 10 percent during the same period. Missouri and the nation grew at a slightly slower pace this last decade than in the 1990´s. Missouri grew at a rate of nine percent in the 1990´s, while the nation´s growth rate was 13 percent during that same period.

Missouri´s five fastest growing counties by percent change were:

Missouri, following a trend occurring nationally, has become more racially and ethnically diverse over the course of the last decade. Missouri´s minority population has increased from 16 percent in 2000, to 19 percent in 2010.
